Fairy Tail is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Masahima. An ongoing anime produced by A-1 Pictures and Satelight was released in Japan on October 12, 2009, and has spawned three original video animes (OVA). The series follows the adventures of Lucy Heartfilia, a teenage wizard who joins the high ranking wizards' guild and teams up with fellow guild member and Fire Dragon Slayer, Natsu Dragneel as he searches for the fire dragon Igneel (also known as Natsu's foster father).

The adventure starts off when a 17-year-old young celestial wizard, Lucy Heartfillia runs away from her home and joins a guild infamously known for its members who have overly destructive antics, Fairy Tail. Along the way, she meets a young boy named Natsu Salamander who is travelling to Fiore with his partner Happy (a talking cat) in search for his foster parent, a dragon named Igneel who had disappeared without a trace almost seven years ago. Shortly after their meeting, Lucy was abducted by the so called "Salamander" of Fairy Tail, Bora (who proclaims that he is the great Fire user of the Fairy Tail Guild). Natsu then rescues Lucy and reveals himself as the real Salamander and a Dragon Slayer, a wizard with Dragon abilities. After the rescue, Natsu then offers membership to Lucy to join Fairy Tail.

In Fairy Tail, Lucy forms a team with Natsu, Happy, Gray Fullbuster (an Ice wizard with a habit of stripping) and Erza Scarlet (an armoured female wizard and also known as 'Titania' Queen of Fairies). The five go on missions for their guild and battle wide range of villains, which include Dark (illegal) Guilds led by the Balam Alliance, demons created by the Dark Wizard, Zeref, Phantom Lord (a rival guild to Fairy Tail), Erza's former childhood friend Jellal Fernandes, Laxus Dreyer (a lacrimated Thunder Dragon Slayer and also renegade grandson of Fairy Tail's Master Makarov and Master Ivan's (Master of Raven Tail) son). Fairy Tail also sees the union with two other Dragon Slayers : Steel Dragon Slayer, Gajeel Redfox (previously from Phantom Lord) and Sky Dragon Slayer, Wendy Marvell (previously from an 'illusion' guild, Cait Shelter) who were both raised by dragons namely Metalicana and Grandine respectively, who have also disappeared the same year as Igneel.
Later on in the series, several members of Fairy Tail, including Natsu, Lucy and their friends, gather for an annually held examination on their guild's sacred ground of Tenrou Island, where they discover that Zeref has been living on the island and is being sought by one of the guilds of the Balam Alliance, Grimoire Heart. Though Fairy Tail defeats Grimoire Heart, the incident summons the Black Dragon of Destruction and Apocolypse, Acnologia, which attacks the island. However, everyone on the island was protected by the spirit of the First Master of Fairy Tail, Mavis Vermillion, and reappears 7 years later. Upon returning home, they discovered that Fairy Tail has now become the weakest guild in Fiore, Zeref is on the loose, the world's Magic has increased, and now more powerful rival guilds and villain awaits them.
